Those tapestry sofas were a serious mistake with Chopper and later with Trixie, who's even more destructive, so nice rugs are off the table here. I used to have a seven foot palm tree behind one of those sofas. Trixie kept trying to climb it and broke off a lot of fronds, which the dogs would then eat and throw up on the floor.
So one day I decided to do something about it. I wrapped the base of the palm tree in chicken wire as a disincentive to her climbing it. And I bought those one-foot square pieces of double-sided adhesive tape which promised to discourage cats from clawing furniture forever and stuck them all over the back of the sofa (her favorite clawing spot).
I took the dogs out for a walk. When I returned I found my palm tree bent in two and stuck in the tape. Talk about a resounding FU from a cat.
The problem with rugs are the two other animals
Two large cats who still have their claws.
