LCD screens use power to energize an electronic mask to block the backlighting, therefore "creating" black. Power-wise, it's backwards from how CRTs generate black (which is to say, they don't do anything) while black is the most expensive color to generate on an LCD panel.

Market penetration for flatscreen monitors is like 75% now too. But that site actually takes this into account with its power estimate.
